The economy around Luxembourg’s terraces: key industry players share their insights
Round table organized by Servipay as part of the “Terrass vum Joer” campaign — in collaboration with B17 Luxembourg
Luxembourg’s terraces are not just a simple alignment of tables and chairs in the sun. They represent a true economic, social, and cultural ecosystem. This was the unanimous conclusion of the round table organized by Servipay at B17, bringing together six key industry players: Steve Martellini (Secretary General, Horesca), Laurent Goffin (Commercial Director, Regie.lu), Maurice Bauer (First Alderman of the City of Luxembourg), Alexandre Renaux (Chief Marketing Officer, Servipay), François Renaux (Chief Financial Officer, Servipay) and Nicolas Vécrigner-Tourcher (Chief Operating Officer at Mama Boys Group).
A resilient sector facing crises
Steve Martellini opened the discussion by outlining the challenging environment faced by Luxembourg’s establishments. After Covid, the energy crisis, and current geopolitical tensions, restaurateurs are facing multiple pressures: rising prices, labor shortages, increasing wages, and higher energy and banking costs.
He also highlighted that Luxembourg sometimes applies regulations more strictly than neighboring countries, calling for more pragmatism.
Media as a support lever
Laurent Goffin emphasized the strong connection between Luxembourgers and gastronomy. During Covid, Regie.lu supported the sector by providing free visibility and resources. This led to the creation of “Terrass vum Joer,” inviting the public to vote for their favorite terrace.
City of Luxembourg: flexibility and vision
Maurice Bauer highlighted the city’s key role, particularly its flexibility in allowing terrace expansions during Covid. These measures became long-term policies that helped revitalize the city.
Servipay: technology serving terraces
Alexandre Renaux presented Servipay’s approach: flexible payment solutions, including short-term rentals, event solutions, API integrations, and QR code payments.
Despite rising costs, Servipay reduced its pricing while maintaining service quality. Based in Kockelscheuer and labeled “Made in Luxembourg,” the company provides 24/7 local support.
The entrepreneur’s perspective: experience matters
Nicolas Vécrigner-Tourcher explained that terraces can represent up to 70% of annual revenue. However, beyond operations, atmosphere is key to customer loyalty.
An ecosystem to build together
François Renaux concluded that terraces are a shared ecosystem where all stakeholders must collaborate.
The discussions continued informally over drinks.
